The mausoleum is located in the capital Ankara in the Rasatepe district and was designed by architects Emin Onat and Ahmet Orhan Arda, whose design beat 48 other entries from several countries in a competition led by the Turkish government in 1941.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first president of the Republic of Turkey, died in Dolmabahce Palace, his official residence in Istanbul, on November 10, 1938. His state funeral was held in the capital Ankara on November 21, and was attended by dignitaries from seventeen countries.

After arriving at the Ethnography Museum in Ankara, Atatürk’s coffin was placed inside a specially built white marble sarcophagus, which was covered with the Turkish flag. His body remained in the Ethnography Museum in Ankara until November 10, 1953.
