A high-level UN delegation, including the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, the Director of the Regional Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for the Middle East and North Africa in Cairo, the Head of the Office of the Representative of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Cairo, and representatives of the World Food Programme in Cairo, visited the city of Arish and the Rafah border crossing to follow up on vital preparations for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza following the recent ceasefire agreement.

The UN reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting the people in Gaza who are most in need of humanitarian assistance, and this visit comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to ensure that the aid pipeline through Egypt is operating at its maximum capacity.

“The core mission of the UN is to provide support to those in need. Cooperation with the Egyptian government, the Egyptian Red Crescent and the Governor of North Sinai is ongoing to support the delivery of essential humanitarian aid, with our full commitment to ongoing coordination and support on the ground,” said Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt.

“With the humanitarian situation inside Gaza reaching catastrophic levels, the ceasefire represents a golden opportunity to alleviate the immense suffering caused by this conflict by enhancing the delivery of aid to the Strip through all possible means to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those most in need,” Panova added.

Since October 2023, the Egyptian Red Crescent has been leading the coordination of humanitarian aid delivery from Egypt through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings, playing a vital role in facilitating the safe and efficient transport of essential supplies. The United Nations in Egypt works closely with the Egyptian Red Crescent, local authorities and international partners to enhance our preparedness, and we – together with our partners – are now ready to seize this opportunity to maximize the impact of each shipment of aid.

Humanitarian supplies entering Gaza via Egypt are sourced locally and internationally, and are provided via Egyptian sea and air ports before being transported to the city of El Arish, where they are screened, inspected and coordinated at the Egyptian Red Crescent’s logistics hub, from where they are dispatched into the Gaza Strip.
