President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has ordered government bodies to follow up on developments from Friday’s deadly train collision, and to form investigative work teams in order to identify the reasons behind the accident and hold those responsible to account.

A train collision in Alexandria on Friday left at least 36 people dead and 123 injured, according to health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed.

In a statement carried by MENA state news agency, El-Sisi also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, adding that the government will use its full capacity to provide full care for the injured.

One of the trains was travelling from Cairo, and the other from Port Said.

The transport mininstry said in an official statement that the train coming from Cairo to Alexandria crashed into the back of the train coming from Port Said to Alexandria, which was stationary at Khorsid station when the collision occurred.

Governor of Alexandria Mohammed Soltan told Al-Ahram Arabic that the initial investigations suggest that the driver of one of the trains was responsible for the collision, as he had not seen a signal.

Khorshid station is on the Cairo-Alexandria line.
