After Putin’s honoring, Moscow University celebrates its 270th anniversary

A historic celebration at the Kremlin Palace saw a large turnout of 5,000 guests to celebrate the 270th anniversary of the founding of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The ceremony was opened by the university’s president, Viktor Sadovnichiy, with a speech thanking President Putin, who was keen to honor the university’s Board of Trustees with medals to congratulate them on this historic event. Putin emphasized that Russia is proud of Moscow University, its long history, and its status as one of the top 500 universities in the world. Sadovnichiy paid tribute to the great academician Lomonosov, who founded the university in 1775 by decree of Empress Elizaveta. The university president emphasized that Moscow University laid the foundation for the higher education system in Russia and has graduated many scholars who have served science in the country and the world in all disciplines. Sadovnichiy highlighted the role of the university’s professors and students in participating in the defense of the homeland as volunteers during World War II. He also praised the increase in student numbers, which reflects the university’s standing in Russian society. Enrollment has become the dream of every young person, and the university has become the jewel of Russian education. He also touched on Moscow University’s role in establishing numerous Russian universities through support in terms of professors and curricula, and the establishment of research and scientific centers.

Many prominent figures in society participated in the celebration, including ministers, scientists, public figures, writers, and a host of art stars who are graduates of the university.

Dr. Amr Salama, President of the Association of Arab Universities, also participated from Egypt. He delivered a speech in which he praised Moscow University’s historic role in the fields of education and science, emphasizing that cooperation with Arab universities is constantly growing.

Dr. Mohamed El-Sergany, Cultural Counselor in Moscow, and Sherif Gad, President of the Egyptian Association of Graduates of Russian and Soviet Universities, also participated, emphasizing his pride in being a graduate of Moscow University. Gad welcomed Victor Sadovnichiy’s desire to cooperate with Egyptian universities in the coming period.
