On Monday, January 27, 2025, Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, met with Ms. Amy Pope, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, at the beginning of his visit to Geneva.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed Egypt’s appreciation for the fruitful and extended cooperation with the International Organization for Migration to ensure comprehensive management of migration and promote sustainable development in accordance with the principles and objectives included in the International Covenant on Migration. He reviewed the most important determinants of the Egyptian position in relation to adopting a comprehensive approach in dealing with the issue of migration that is not limited to security aspects, but rather takes into account the developmental dimensions associated with it and addresses the root causes leading to illegal migration.

In a related context, Minister Abdel Aati expressed Egypt’s concern about the deteriorating political and humanitarian conditions in neighboring countries, including conflicts, political crises, and the negative effects of climate change, and their impact on the growth of waves of displacement and migration, and the increase in migrant flows to Egypt. He added that Egypt hosts more than 9 million migrants, refugees and those in asylum-like situations, and reviewed the efforts made by all national authorities to accommodate the arrivals, meet all their needs and provide them with basic services, and the resulting burdens on the general budget of the state and the host community, especially in light of the modest amount of international support that Egypt receives and its disproportionateness to the burdens it bears.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also reiterated Egypt’s position on the importance of intensifying international efforts to ensure the fair and sustainable activation of the principle of burden and responsibility sharing, and urged the United Nations to provide the necessary support to help Egypt bear the burdens of hosting large numbers of migrants and support its tireless efforts in the migration file. He also reviewed the ongoing efforts made by the Egyptian authorities to combat illegal immigration and smuggling of migrants across borders in line with the objectives of the National Strategy to Combat and Prevent Illegal Immigration.

On the other hand, it was agreed during the meeting on joint cooperation to support early recovery efforts in the Gaza Strip to enable the brotherly Palestinian people to remain on their land, as Minister Abdel Aati renewed Egypt’s position rejecting any attempts targeting the displacement of the brotherly Palestinian people from their lands, stressing in this regard the non-replaceable mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
