The first time I wrote an article about the BRICS group was in August 2018, entitled “The Arabs and the BRICS Alliance” in the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper, which died suddenly. The BRICS group had 5 members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. I discussed the outcome of the 10th BRICS Summit, which concluded in Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa, the fifth member of this alliance under the slogan “BRICS in Africa.” The population of BRICS in 2018 represented nearly 40% of the world’s population.
Today, after six years, I return to write in the prestigious newspaper “Al-Masry Al-Youm” about this growing alliance, after the conclusion of the last BRICS summit last week in the city of Kazan in Russia, where the number of BRICS members reached 10 countries after Egypt, the Emirates, Iran and Ethiopia joined the group, which raises the population of the BRICS countries to 3 billion and 625 million people, which represents 50% of the world’s population, and the Saudi Arabia (EEIES) is still studying and thinking about membership.
The BRICS alliance began in 2006 when Brazil, Russia, India and China agreed to establish a global political economic group called the “BRIC Group”, using the first letter of each country’s name. The first summit of this group was held in 2009, then South Africa joined the group in 2010, so the group’s name was changed to BRICS, and its national product today amounts to approximately 28.5% of the global economy. The BRICS group controls 25% of global trade.
In 2014, the BRICS alliance established a bank and a development and emergency reserve fund with an initial capital of $100 billion, and was headquartered in Shanghai. The BRICS group focuses on developing cooperation in the fields of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the digital revolution, and increasing the acceleration of development rates and nation building, as well as the gradual increase in economic cooperation between its members.
One of the most important ambitions that the BRICS alliance seeks to achieve is to reduce dependence on the dollar… and to begin adopting the local currencies of the BRICS members as an intermediary in trade between its members in an effort to innovate and issue a unified currency for the group.
The BRICS group also seeks to end the control of both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank over the capabilities of the people and to activate regional institutions such as the Asian Development Bank and others to avoid the economies of developing countries from the agendas and interventions of both the Fund and the World Bank.
In addition to these two goals, the BRICS group seeks to establish a multipolar global economy. What is interesting is that the establishment of the BRICS bloc and the increase in its membership coincides with the increase in areas of political tensions and hot armed conflicts that the world is witnessing in Ukraine, occupied Palestine, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen, and the rest will inevitably come soon.
In this context, we cannot forget that China, through BRICS, is working to enhance its international power and influence, especially in Africa. As for Russia, the important player in the BRICS group, it seems that it has a different goal than China. Russia considers the BRICS group a means and a form of cold conflict taking place between it and the alliance of Western countries led by the United States of America, which imposed various forms of sanctions on Russia and its President Putin after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
This raging and unstable global scene forces us all to seriously consider the following question: Are these alliances, conflicts and armed tensions merely points of conflict or are they perhaps the beginning of a third world war..? Can the BRICS alliance be described as the peaceful side of this global military heating up that indicates that the current world order that began with the 1954 Brighton Agreement is nearing its expiration date.. and that a new world order is in the process of being formed..? The coming days, events and nights will answer these questions soon.
