Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS), met today, Sunday, September 22, 2024, with Mr. Javier Martinez Acha Vazquez, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the (79) session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Aboul Gheit congratulated Minister Vazquez on assuming his new position, as well as on the occasion of his country winning a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the years 2025-2026, and the Secretary-General expressed his confidence that Panama will support Arab issues, most notably the Palestinian issue, through this membership.

The spokesman added that the Secretary-General called on the Panama Foreign Minister to recognize the independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, expressing his appreciation for Panama’s supportive stance on the issue within the United Nations, most recently voting in favor of the General Assembly resolution last May declaring the State of Palestine eligible for full membership in the United Nations.

The spokesman said that the two sides exchanged views on the repercussions of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip in the entire region, which is witnessing a dangerous escalation.
