In recent years, Kabaddi, an ancient Indian sport, has been gaining significant popularity in Egypt. This thrilling and physically demanding game, traditionally played in India and South Asia, is now capturing the hearts of Egyptian sports enthusiasts.
2. The Embassy of India in Cairo, in collaboration with the Egyptian Kabaddi Federation, has been instrumental in promoting the sport.The Embassy of India in Cairo organized ‘India-Egypt Friendship Kabaddi Tournament’ in cooperation with the Egyptian Kabaddi Federation on 30 July 2024 at Helwan University Club. A total of 12 teams participated in the tournament in two categories for men and women. The prize distribution ceremony for winners was organized along with the India Day cultural event. Tournament succeeded in showcasing Kabaddi’s intensity and athleticism, drawing large crowds.
3. Kabaddi is an energetic sport, with seven players on each side playing for a period of 40 minutes in two spells of 20 minutes each. One player, chanting Kabaddi, Kabaddi, Kabaddi charges into the opponent court, called a ‘Raid’ and try to touch the opponent closest to him, while the seven opponents make maneuvers to catch the attacker. This is Kabaddi, the match of one against seven, known as the game of struggle.
4. The sport’s inclusion in international sporting events, such as the Asian Games (in 2007), has boosted its global recognition. Over the years, there have been gradual but significant changes in the practice of the sport. Introduction of mats, shoes, techniques and changes in the rules have made the sport even more interesting. It is an easy game to play and does not require elaborate instruments and equipment.
5. The Egypt Kabaddi Federation (EKF) is playing an important role in promoting and developing Kabaddi in Egypt. Egyptian Kabaddi Federation organizes several activities including Kabaddi training sessions, coaching and tournaments to popularize Kabaddi among Egyptians. The Pro Kabaddi League in India has also played a significant role in popularizing the sport, inspiring similar initiatives in Egypt.
6. The future of Kabaddi in Egypt looks promising. As Kabaddi continues to gain momentum, it stands as a symbol of the enduring friendship and shared heritage between these two great civilizations. With increasing participation and support from both the Indian and Egyptian communities, Kabaddi is set to become a very common in Egypt’s sporting landscape. The sport not only promotes physical fitness and teamwork but also serves as a cultural bridge, strengthening the bonds between India and Egypt.
