EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement_ additional FINANCIAL and economic SUPPORT for Egypt

Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman and Director of the Public Diplomacy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, received, on the evening of Friday, February 2nd, a phone call from the European Union Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Policy, Oliver Varheli, as part of following up on the results of Minister Shoukry’s visit. The latter went to Brussels, and witnessed the European consensus on increasing European economic support for Egypt within the framework of raising relations between the two sides to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Ambassador Abu Zeid explained that the European Commissioner was keen, during the call, to inform Minister Sameh Shoukry of the developments related to the approval by the European Union summit, which was held yesterday in Brussels, of additional financial allocations to neighboring countries of the European Union, including Egypt, within the framework of the midterm review of the European budget for the period. (2021-2027), and what this decision includes in allocating additional financial and economic support to Egypt.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the call also addressed aspects of deepening cooperation between the two sides during the coming period, and developing relations in various political, economic, commercial, cultural and scientific fields within the framework of the new comprehensive strategic partnership relationship.

The call also touched on the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, the importance of increasing the volume and access of humanitarian aid to the population of the Strip, and removing any obstacles that prevent it from reaching adequate and sustainable aid to the people of the Strip.
