Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman and director of the Public Diplomacy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Minister of Foreign Affairs (FA), Sameh Shoukry, met today, May 25, with the new Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), “Amy Pope”, within the framework of the meetings he is holding with the organizations and agencies of the United Nations in Geneva.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that the Foreign Minister started the meeting by congratulating the new director of the International Organization for Migration on her victory in the elections, as the first woman to hold this position since the establishment of the organization in 1951. He also affirmed confidence in her ability to lead the organization during the current phase that is witnessing increasing international and regional challenges.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that Minister Shoukry expressed Egypt’s appreciation for the fruitful and extended cooperation with the International Organization for Migration, and the aspiration to strengthen this partnership to ensure comprehensive management of migration in a manner that enhances the achievement of sustainable development, stressing that Egypt adopts a comprehensive approach in dealing with migration governance with various aspects of the phenomenon. .
The Foreign Minister also conveyed Egypt’s aspiration to strengthen cooperation with the organization to coordinate in order to reduce the burdens borne by Egypt from hosting 9 million migrants and refugees on its territory, in addition to the burdens resulting from receiving Sudanese arrivals fleeing violence, which requires redoubling efforts to mobilize the support of the international community for Egypt. Ambassador Abu Zeid added that the new director of the organization emphasized the important and pivotal role that Egypt plays in dealing with migration issues, expressing her aspiration to enhance cooperation with Egypt, as well as welcoming the role played by receiving large numbers of migrants and providing their basic needs.
