A joint statement was issued by the tripartite mechanism (the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the United Nations) and the quartet countries (Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States of America), which reads as follows:
Members of the Tripartite Mechanism (African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the United Nations) and Quadruple Mechanism (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States of America) welcome the announcement by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to extend the current ceasefire for an additional 72 hours, and call for its full implementation.
We also welcome their willingness to engage in dialogue in order to achieve a permanent cessation of hostilities and to ensure unhindered humanitarian access. This initial diplomatic phase contributes to a permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements which will contribute to the development of a de-escalation plan as outlined in the African Union statement of 20 April. It was endorsed by the League of Arab States, the European Union, the Troika and other partners.
