Mr. Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received today, November 28, Mr. Abdoulaye Bathily, Special Representative (SR) of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
In a statement by Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he indicated that Mr. Sameh Shoukry was keen to renew congratulations to the Special Representative for assuming his position on his first visit to Egypt, expressing Egypt’s full support for him to make his mission a success in order to restore stability in Libya. And stressing the centrality of the role of the United Nations and its impartiality, which makes it gain the confidence of the parties inside Libya and in the international community.
Mr. Sameh Shoukry presented the continuous efforts that Egypt made and is still making sincerely to resolve the crisis, especially through its recent hosting of rounds of the constitutional track between the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, pointing to the importance of completing this track and the need to hold presidential and legislative elections simultaneously in Libya in order to end the crisis. Achieving the aspirations of the brotherly Libyan people, with an emphasis on the Libyan ownership of the solution and the importance of respecting the elected legislative institution.
Ambassador Abu Zaid added that the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that there is no way to implement existing agreements, and adhere to legal and political entitlements, without specific mechanisms and timeframes for implementation, and vigorous follow-up by the international community to the parties responsible for implementation. Shoukry added that this also requires the implementation of the UN and international decisions regarding the exit of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libya within a specific time frame, stressing in this regard the importance of supporting the mission of the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee.
For his part, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations reviewed his efforts and contacts with the Libyan arena, and his keenness to speak and listen to all parties, indicating that he had wished to visit Egypt since assuming his position, but his knowledge of the commitments and concerns of the climate conference prevented his ability to complete it. visit earlier. Batili also expressed his full appreciation for the constructive and pivotal Egyptian role in Libya, and what Egypt has suffered greatly over the past years as a result of the continuation of this crisis, and his aspiration to coordinate with Egypt during the coming period, as it was agreed to intensify work towards advancing the Libyan-Libyan political solution to achieve Security, stability and prosperity in brotherly Libya.
