Ambassador of France, Stéphane Romatet, Ambassador of Germany, Cyrill Nunn, and Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, Christian Berger inaugurated today Old Mahalla Water Treatment Plant, near Tanta city. Representatives from Egyptian authorities attended the event, namely Governor of Gharbia and Chairman of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater.

The project includes upgrading and increasing the capacity of the existing water treatment plant by 40,000 m³/daily. This project, which is implemented in the framework of Improved Water and Sanitation Program (IWSP1), enables the residents of this area, 345,600 people, to have access to high-quality clean water.

IWSP1 program takes place in the light of European initiative, aiming at improving potable water and water treatment services in four Delta governorates (Behaira, Damietta, Gharbia, and Sharqia). There are multiple funding parties participating in upgrading existing infrastructure projects and establishing new ones in order to improve water and water treatment services for residents of the concerned governorates.

Notably, this program is a model for coordination between different European development parties, namely European Union, French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB) and KfW Development Bank, together with the Government of Egypt, with a total funding of EUR 295 million.
