The 2020 Report of the Secretary-General on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace has been issued. It outlines how the UN is reorienting its work around prevention, supporting national governments and actors to address the root causes of vulnerability and provide pathways to sustainable development and peace. It is part of a broad and inclusive process that has defined the 2020 peacebuilding architecture review.
The Secretary-General will formally present the report to Member States during a virtual meeting of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council on peacebuilding and sustaining peace tomorrow Friday 11 September 2020 at 11:00 a.m. (New York Time) which will be webcast live on: http://webtv.un.org.
At the center of the Secretary-General’s 2020 Report on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace is the message that, more than ever, multidimensional, coordinated responses and whole-of society approaches are required. Prevention, as the best defense against conflict, rests on inclusive and sustainable development anchored in the protection and promotion of human rights, gender equality, and the goal of leaving no one behind. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated vulnerabilities with particularly devastating consequences in developing and conflict-affected countries. Our commitment to peacebuilding is more urgent than never. United Nations peacebuilding works and the report gives many examples of results on the ground in countries such as Cote d’Ivoire, Honduras, Madagascar and South Sudan.
