Soon, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country discovered the largest oil field in the Black Sea, which contains 320 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Erdogan also announced that Turkey is about to discover oil in the Mediterranean … and that Turkey is on its way to achieving self-sufficiency in oil.

Erdogan stressed that energy represents a great importance in achieving national independence, in addition to being a major component of development.

As of today, the Turkish drilling ship “Fatih” starts explorations for the oil offshore section “Tuna – 1” in the Black Sea, said the Minister of Energy of the country Fatih Dönmez, quoted by BNR.

The plot is located off the coast of Eregli, Zonguldak district. These are the first studies Ankara is conducting with its own drilling ship. Earlier, the drilling tower of the Fatih ship, which had been dismantled as it crossed the Bosphorus from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, was completed in the port of Trabzon.

In a television interview late last month, Fatih Dönmez said that specialists from the state-owned Turkish Petroleum Company were encouraged by the available seismic surveys. He added that Romania has discovered some deposits in the fields close to the Turkish sea zone, and seismic surveys in Bulgaria continue.

Fatih Dönmez recalled that in the past, Turkey has drilled 10 boreholes along its shores, as well as 5-6 deep-sea boreholes in partnership with international companies.

Earlier, the Turkish Minister of Energy announced that the depth of drilling that the ship “Fatih” will conduct will be about 2 km. below sea level. This will be the first deep-sea exploration for the ship’s “black gold” in the Black Sea. The vessel was previously used in the Mediterranean, where it drilled four times over two years, including in the disputed area around Cyprus. After completing its work in the south, the ship underwent 1.5 months of preparation for its new mission at Istanbul’s Haidarpasa port.

After modernization, the ship launched in 2011 in South Korea is currently among the five vessels in the world of the sixth drilling generation.
