EURASIA DIARY – It is not an unknown fact that Armenia has pursued a policy of ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijan for centuries in order to occupy its territorial. As a result of the Karabakh conflict, Armenia has occupied the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding regions of Azerbaijan during the 1991-1993 military ceasefire. Of course, it’s not a supersizing fact that foreign strengths have also helped supporting Armenia in this case. Despite the declaration of a ceasefire between the two countries in 1994, Armenia continues to provoke Azerbaijan.
Over the years, Armenia has repeatedly violated the ceasefire, opened fire against Azerbaijani soldiers, civilians and claimed hundreds of lives.
Starting from the afternoon on July 12th, units of the Armenian armed forces grossly violating the ceasefire on the direction of the Tovuz district along the state border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, subjected to fire on our positions using artillery mounts. While the world is together fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic, Armenia choose to benefit from this by attacking Azerbaijan. This is clear evidence of Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan and the repeated violation of the 1994 ceasefire. The number of martyrs is more than 10, including 4 high-ranking servicemen. The Armenian army ignores the rules of quarantine and war, attacks Azerbaijan and threatens the lives of civilians. So why is the world denying Azerbaijan the right of protecting its territory and do what ever it takes to regain its occupied areas.
On July 13th the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev chaired meeting of Security Council. And said during his speech “All the responsibility lies squarely with the military-political leadership of Armenia. Such events occur because of the hypocritical and dishonest activities of the Armenian leadership. On the one hand, it appeals to the international community and asks for help in strengthening the ceasefire on the Armenian-Azerbaijani contact line. On the other, by committing military provocations it wants to invade the territory of Azerbaijan, seize our positions, fire on the civilian population and our villages. This ugly and insidious policy will lead Armenia to the abyss. All the responsibility falls on the leadership of Armenia. Azerbaijan will continue to protect its territorial integrity and borders. The crushing blows inflicted on the enemy yesterday afternoon and this night showed this once again. Our fallen servicemen have been avenged, their blood has not and will not remain on the ground.”
The latest act of aggression committed by Armenia is another provocation. Armenia’s atrocities and provocative actions must be condemned and this aggressor state must be held accountable. The whole world community must condemn Armenia’s aggressive policy and violations of the law.
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has a negative impact on the whole region. As a result of the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, more than 1 million Azerbaijanis were expelled from their homes and became refugees and internally displaced persons. The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions calling for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the territory of Azerbaijan, but these resolutions have not yet been implemented. Azerbaijan has always been against the war and supports the peaceful settlement of this conflict.
