The retired midfielder currently holds the record for most international caps with 184 appearances for Egypt.
Real Madrid defender and Spain captain Sergio Ramos currently has 167 caps and looks to be closing in on Ahmed Hassan’s record.
Hassan’s last international cap for Egypt was in May 2012 when head coach Bob Bradley was at the helm.
The American manager took over the Egyptian national team between 2011 and 2013.
“I had the chance to be capped more than 200 times for Egypt if it wasn’t for Bob Bradley,” Hassan told Sada El-Balad.
“During Bob Bradley’s tenure as Egypt’s head coach along with Zaki Abdel-Fattah, they didn’t want me in the squad.
“In one of the international breaks when I was a Zamalek player, he called up 11 players from Zamalek to the Egypt squad and he did not pick me.
“The difference between me and Ramos is 17 international caps and it is not a small number by any means.
“The record is still up for grabs between players and every player wants to achieve individual accolades. That’s what he [Ramos] wants to do.
“In the last years, Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon tried to break my record but they did not succeed in doing so,” Hassan concluded.
