A high level Egyptian delegation, including Ministers of Education and Higher Education has visited London to open new UK-Egypt education partnerships. Dr Khaled Ghaffar and UK Universities Minster Sam Gyimah signed a new MOU, to promote the establishment of top-notch UK university branch campuses in Egypt.
Education Minister Tarek Shawky and Higher Education Minister Khaled Ghaffar headed the Egyptian delegation to London and Liverpool, accompanied by the Chair of the Parliamentary Education Committee Dr Gamal Shiha, Vice-Chair Dr Hany Abaza and Chair of the Finance and Planning Committee Dr Hussein Eissa. As part of the visit, Minister Shawky met with British Schools Minister Nick Gibb and Minister for the Middle East Alastair Burt, as well education specialists, to exchange expertise on how to develop education to cater to a growing population.
The Education World Forum is the largest gathering of Education and Skills Ministers in the world and takes place in the London in January each year. It brings together education pioneers, policy makers and education advisers representing over two-thirds of the world’s population to discuss future education policy. According to 2018 World University Rankings, four of the UK’s universities feature in the global top 10. This agreement will enable closer cooperation between UK and Egyptian universities, complementing existing bilateral relationships including higher education and research initiatives.
Minster Sam Gyimah said: “I am delighted to have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Egyptian government which will allow UK universities to deliver world class degree programmes in Egypt from today. The UK has already has a strong track record of delivering higher education overseas and this agreement underscores that proud tradition. I welcome the contribution that this partnership will make to both UK and Egyptian economies and the wider benefits it will provide to students and institutions in both counties.”
UK Ambassador John Casson said: “Through our successful Chevening and Newton Musharafa educational programmes, the UK offers world-class education and research to thousands of Egyptians. Now, this MOU goes further by bringing this top-notch education here to those learning and researching in Egypt. Young people must be given the tools they need to fulfil their potential, get jobs, and play their full part in our modern world.”
